Among बनाम Between

अवधारणा 1

निम्नलिखित मामलों में, दो से अधिक के संदर्भ में भी Between का प्रयोग किया जाता है (among के बजाय):

• जब हम एक निश्चित संख्या में चीजों/लोगों आदि के बारे में बात करते हैं, यानी हम एकवचन संज्ञाओं (singular nouns) का उपयोग करके समूह के अलग-अलग सदस्यों को निर्दिष्ट करते हैं
• जब हम तुलना/पारस्परिक संबंध/सहयोग आदि के बारे में बात करते हैं। (जैसे की, a difference between..., contrast between..., a connection between..., a friendship between..., a link between...)

In this rugby tournament, matches will be played between South Africa, England and New Zealand. (देशों की निश्चित संख्या)

Treaty of Amsterdam was a treaty between the nine European nations. (आपसी रिश्ते, mutual relationship)

हम 'इस बीच (meanwhile)' का अर्थ देने के लिए भी between का इस्तेमाल करते हैं|

अवधारणा 2

हम 'between' के साथ बहुवचन संज्ञा/सर्वनाम (plural noun/pronoun) का प्रयोग करते हैं।

between the countries, between friends, between them/us

अवधारणा 3: Between .... and

• 'between' के बाद अक्सर 'and' आता है
  पैटर्न: between + and
  
  The press conference will be held between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
  My village is somewhere between Meerut and Hapur.

• ‘between .... and' सर्वनाम का objective case लेता है।
  There is no relationship between him and me. (he और I नहीं)

अवधारणा 4

Among का उपयोग 2 से अधिक चीजों के संबंध में किया जाता है, जो शारीरिक रूप से मौजूद हैं और आसानी से गिनने योग्य हैं।

This brunette woman was among the 88 victims of the green river serial killer.

इसलिए, हम निम्नलिखित मामलों में 'among' का उपयोग नहीं कर सकते हैं:

अवधारणा 5

हम निम्नलिखित मामलों में among का उपयोग करते हैं (between के बजाय) :

  The COVID pandemic has now broken out among the European countries. (यानी उनके अंदर)

• जब हमारा मतलब 'में से एक / में से कुछ (one/some of)' से है

• जब हमारा मतलब 'में से (out of)' से है
  Among the metropolitan cities of India, Delhi is the most polluted. (यानी सभी मेट्रो शहरों में से)

• 'among other things' अभिव्यक्ति में (हम 'between other things' नहीं कहते हैं)
  Among other things, I enjoy reading and travelling.

Among बनाम Amongst

Amongst और Among का मतलब एक ही है। लेकिन कुछ मामूली अंतर हैं।

• Amongst, 'the' से पहले आता है
  There was no co-ordination amongst the players.

• Among का प्रयोग व्यंजन ध्वनि (consonant sound) से पहले किया जाता है, जबकि amongst का प्रयोग स्वर ध्वनि (vowel sound) से पहले किया जाता है।
  among them. ('them' एक व्यंजन ध्वनि से शुरू होता है)
  amongst us. ('us' एक स्वर ध्वनि से शुरू होता है)

नोट

आधुनिक अंग्रेजी में हम इस नियम का पालन नहीं करते हैं। हम 'amongst' का उपयोग वहां कर लेते हैं, जहां भी वाक्य की लय के साथ वह अच्छी तरह फिट बैठ रहा हो|

Amid बनाम Amidst

Amid/Amidst का प्रयोग दो से अधिक के लिए किया जाता है। Among/Amongst के लिए भी यही सच है।

Among और Amongst की तरह ही, Amid और Amidst के अर्थ भी काफी समान हैं, यानी Amid और Amidst का एक ही मतलब है।

फिर उनमें अंतर क्या है?

खैर, मतभेद बहुत मामूली हैं और इसलिए हमें कुछ गहराई में जाना होगा।

Amid का प्रयोग व्यंजन ध्वनि (consonant sound) से पहले किया जाता है, जबकि Amidst का प्रयोग स्वर ध्वनि (vowel sound) से पहले किया जाता है।

Voting was conducted amid pandemonium. (‘pandemonium' एक व्यंजन ध्वनि से शुरू होता है)
You should speak for us while you are sitting amidst us. ('us' एक स्वर ध्वनि से शुरू होता है)

नोट

In – हम इसका उपयोग तब करते हैं, जब हम किसी एक चीज के भीतर की चीज़ के बारे में बात कर रहे होते हैं।

Amid/Among – जब हम 3 या अधिक चीजों के बारे में बात कर रहे होते हैं, तो हम इनका उपयोग करते हैं।

'Amid/Amidst बनाम Among/Amongst

अवधारणा 1

तीन या अधिक के संग्रह में Amid का प्रयोग किया जाता है (Among के बजाय), जब चीजें भौतिक रूप से मौजूद नहीं हों। (यानी हम इसे अवधारणाओं, concepts के साथ उपयोग कर सकते हैं)

I am amid many difficulties.

अवधारणा 2

जब चीजें भौतिक रूप से मौजूद होती हैं, तो भी 'Amid' का भी उपयोग किया जाता है (Among के बजाय), अगर उन्हें गिनना मुश्किल हो। अत: अगणनीय संज्ञाओं (uncountable nouns) के पहले भी 'Amid/Amidst' का प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

Amid / Amidst – गणनीय/अगणनीय संज्ञा (countable/uncountable noun) के साथ प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।
Among / Amongst – केवल गणनीय संज्ञा (countable noun) के साथ प्रयोग किया जाता है।

There was a lot of stirring amid the crowd.
I got these useful articles amid the rubble.
I could see a colourful, beautiful bird amid the leaves.

Mr. Modi finished his speech among tremendous applause. (गलत)
Mr. Modi finished his speech amid tremendous applause. (सही; applause - uncountable noun)

अवधारणा 3

Amid/Amidst – घेरने का भाव देता है, यानी किसी चीज से घिरा होना।
Among/Amongst – किसी चीज का हिस्सा होने का अहसास देता है।

I didn’t find anything of this sort among your luggage. (गलत)
I didn’t find anything of this sort amid your luggage. (सही)
